This novel pulled me in from the very first word. Arnold has a unique point of view, one I had not really been exposed to before. I have read other books by Sherman Alexie, specifically Flight, but I was better able to connect to this novel. Regardless of where we grow up, I think everyone can connect to the idea of being an outsider in the world they are growing up in. I was bullied when I was in elementary school, and while I can't relate to the physical aspect of what Arnold went through, I do relate to the isolation he felt.
This book makes me what to learn more about reservation life. I think it has a unique view of white privilege, and would be an excellent starting point for a lesson on cultural understanding, and how to avoid cultural appropriation. I also think this would be an amazing way to bridge the gap between traditional and graphic novels.
